Text:   Clara Louise Kemps Byrne was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1905. She was named for her paternal grandmother; however, she preferred her middle name and went by Louise. The family moved to Chicago in 1917. She was an excellent artist, so her wealthy Aunt Pauline funded her additional art training in Los Angeles, California. There, she met her future husband, Charles Hoster Byrne, and they were married on March 16, 1927 in the home of her aunt. They moved to Chicago where, in 1928, their son was born, followed by a daughter in 1932. During the depression, they moved to follow available jobs. Her father died in November of 1935 and her mother lived with the family for the rest of her life. They moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1936, then Phoenix, Tucson and finally to Los Angeles in 1938. For a short time, she worked in a radio repair shop. Then, she rode the Pacific Electric and worked for Los Angeles County where she became a very competent executive secretary to several of the County Supervisors and the Medical Director.
In addition to art, she played the piano and was an avid reader. After her death, her vast library was donated to the local public library. Her children described her as one of the smartest people they ever knew and who seemed to know something about everything. She was struck by breast cancer and died at the young age of 60. She was a devoted daughter, the mother of two, and a grandmother of seven. Phone call to Charles Byrne. 3/12/2011
